English: from an Old English personal name composed of the elements here army + weald ruler, reinforced before the Norman Conquest by the Scandinavian cognate Haraldr, introduced by Norse settlers. The name was not common in the later Middle Ages, perhaps because it was associated with King Harold, the loser at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. It was revived in the 19th century, along with a number of other Old English names.
